Olive Oil Experience and Farm-to-Table Dining in Lefkada: Visiting Lefkada Micro Farm
Share
Lefkada is one of the Ionian Islands — connected to the Greek mainland by
a narrow causeway and surrounded by some of the most spectacularly clear
water in the Mediterranean. It attracts visitors for its beaches, its
sailing, and its landscape of mountains, olive groves, and traditional
villages that have changed relatively little over the past century.
But Lefkada is also a farming island. The interior is covered in olive
groves, vineyards, and smallholdings that have been worked by the same
families for generations. The agricultural tradition here is old, deep,
and still alive — and it produces ingredients of extraordinary quality
that most visitors to the island never encounter beyond a bottle of olive
oil bought in a tourist shop.
Lefkada Micro Farm offers a direct encounter with that tradition — through
an olive oil tasting experience and a farm-to-table dining experience that
together give you the most complete picture of what this island actually
produces and how it tastes.
LEFKADA MICRO FARM AND ANDREAS
Lefkada Micro Farm is a small organic farm located on Lefkada, created
by Andreas — a man who grew up in Athens, returned to his family land
on the island, and in 2020 began the work of bringing a hundred-year-old
olive grove back into productive life.
The farm now produces some of the finest olive oil on Lefkada. In 2024,
Lefkada Micro Farm's extra virgin olive oil received international
recognition at the New York World Olive Oil Competition — one of the
most respected competitions in the global olive oil industry. This is
not a local or regional award. It is international validation that the
oil produced here belongs among the best in the world.
What makes the oil exceptional is the combination of factors that Andreas
has worked to understand and protect — the age of the trees, which are
over a hundred years old, the volcanic soil of Lefkada, the organic
farming practices that protect the natural ecosystem of the grove, and
the careful harvesting and cold-pressing that preserve the oil's natural
compounds.
Andreas describes the philosophy of the farm simply: quality first,
always. The farm produces a limited quantity of oil each year, harvested
by hand and pressed immediately. There is no compromise on any stage of
the process, because each stage affects the final quality of what ends
up in the bottle.
The farm is also integrated into the Slow Food International network —
a connection that reflects the values of small-scale, sustainable,
quality-focused food production that Slow Food champions globally.
THE OLIVE OIL EXPERIENCE
The Lefkada Micro Farm olive oil experience is a two-hour guided tasting
that introduces visitors to extra virgin olive oil as a serious food
product with complexity, character, and health properties that most
people have never had the opportunity to understand.
Most people who consume olive oil regularly have never tasted it properly.
They drizzle it on salads, use it for cooking, and choose it based on
price or brand recognition. The idea that olive oil has a flavor profile
worth examining — aroma, bitterness, pepper finish, color, clarity —
is unfamiliar to most consumers.
The Lefkada Micro Farm experience changes this.
The tasting begins with an introduction to what extra virgin olive oil
actually is — the legal standard, the production requirements, and the
ways in which genuinely high-quality oil differs from the commodity
products that dominate most supermarket shelves. Andreas explains the
health properties of high-phenolic olive oil — the antioxidants, the
anti-inflammatory compounds, the research connecting regular consumption
of quality olive oil with cardiovascular health and cognitive function.
Then you taste. Using a professional sensory disc, you work through
the evaluation of different olive oils — comparing the Lefkada Micro
Farm production with other samples, learning to identify the
characteristics of freshness, quality, and the specific character
of Lefkada's terroir.
By the end of the tasting, you have practical knowledge that will
change how you buy and use olive oil for the rest of your life.
You will know what bitterness and pepper finish indicate about
polyphenol content. You will understand why color is not a reliable
indicator of quality. You will be able to identify the oxidation
notes that signal a degraded oil. And you will have tasted what
genuinely exceptional extra virgin olive oil tastes like — which
makes everything else easier to evaluate.
The experience also covers the olive grove itself — the trees,
the cultivation methods, the harvest process, and the relationship
between the land and the oil it produces.

THE FARM-TO-TABLE DINING EXPERIENCE
The farm-to-table dining experience at Lefkada Micro Farm is a three-hour
visit that combines a guided farm tour with a seven-course vegetarian
tasting menu prepared with ingredients grown on the farm and from the
surrounding area.
This is not restaurant dining moved to an outdoor setting. It is eating
in direct relationship with the land that produced the food — which
fundamentally changes how the food tastes and what it means.
The experience begins with a guided tour of the farm — seeing how the
organic vegetables, fruits, and herbs are grown, understanding the
farming approach, and learning which ingredients will be used in the
meal that follows.
The meal itself is prepared in an open-air kitchen — dishes cooked in
a wood-burning oven using ingredients harvested that day from the farm
garden. The seven courses reflect what is seasonal and abundant at
the moment of your visit, which means the menu is always different
and always reflects the actual state of the farm.
The sample menu includes dishes such as dakos salad with crushed
tomato, tzatziki, rolled aubergines with feta cheese, zucchini with
tomatoes and onions, peppers with vinegar, goat cheese with honey
and cinnamon, and a main course of briam — the traditional Greek
mixed vegetable dish that is one of the finest expressions of
Lefkada's garden produce. The meal ends with seasonal fresh fruits
and is accompanied by local wine.
The food is entirely vegetarian. Approximately 90 percent of
ingredients come from the farm or from local producers on Lefkada.

THE COMBINATION
The two experiences can be booked separately or combined for a
complete immersion in what Lefkada Micro Farm produces. Taking the
olive oil tasting first and the farm-to-table meal second gives
you the most complete picture — understanding the oil that flavors
every dish before you eat the dishes themselves.
This combination represents one of the most complete farm experiences
available anywhere in the Greek islands — an encounter with a specific
piece of land, the person who tends it, and the food it produces,
from the tree and the garden to the table.
WHY LEFKADA
Lefkada's combination of volcanic soil, Ionian climate, and traditional
farming practices creates conditions for producing food of exceptional
quality. The island has remained less developed than some of its Ionian
neighbors, which means the agricultural landscape is more intact and
the food traditions more continuous.
Visiting Lefkada Micro Farm gives you access to that quality in the
most direct form possible — experiencing it on the farm where it is
produced, with the person who produced it, in the context of the
landscape that shaped it.
HOW TO GET THERE
Lefkada is connected to the Greek mainland by a causeway and is
accessible by car from Athens in approximately four to five hours,
or by flying to the nearby Preveza airport. Exact meeting point
details are provided after booking.
BOOK THE EXPERIENCE
Both Lefkada Micro Farm experiences are available through Farmiyo —
a platform connecting travelers with authentic farm and food
experiences across Europe.
